About the Institute

Manipal Centre for Information Science (MCIS), an industry driven state-of-the-art institute of excellence in the areas of Embedded Systems, Medical Software and VLSI, under Manipal University was set up in the year 1998. Since its inception, the Institute has been continuously striving for excellence in education, training and research with a mission of “Value Based Education”.

MCIS has been conducting MS programs in the highly specialized areas like Embedded Systems, Medical Software, VLSI-CAD, VLSI (System Design & Verification), Embedded and Wireless Technology, IT Management. The institute is working in close association with industry giants like Cerner Corporation, GE Health Care, NXP Semiconductors, Philips, Synopsys Inc, Whizchip, for its PG programs. At MCIS, we create a vibrant environment where creativity and discipline strike balance.

MCIS provides an ideal place for creative thinking. Students studying here are well accepted by the Industry. The industry linkages and the practical oriented curriculum have attracted a lot of students. The infrastructure, teaching and the placement makes it an ideal destination for post graduate studies. The programs and subjects are updated very frequently based on industry feedbacks.

The industry primarily helps students to get placements for internship in premier industries during the second year. It also supports students to get placed in various reputed companies. Academically oriented students can take up a PhD program in Indian and foreign universities. The emphasis of the program is to make students proficient in programming and suitable for the industry. Research and publications are always encouraged.


Manipal University

Program Details

MS Medical Software (MS)
This program has been designed to create skilled professionals who can “engineering the medical world”. With this view point Manipal University and Wipro GE Medical Systems Pvt. Ltd. (now renamed as GE Health Care) have signed an MoU in the year 1998 to start a PG program. The curriculum is jointly designed in consultation with experts from GE Health Care, Professors from leading educational institutions. Students are trained to suit the industry requirements.

MS VLSI CAD(VLSI)
The VLSI-CAD program aims at the development of skills required for the rapidly growing “Electronic Design Automations” (EDA) as well as VLSI design industry. Comprehensive training in the field of EDA tool development and VLSI design by imparting the required theoretical and practical knowledge and exposing the students to the cutting-edge EDA tools from Synopsys, MAGMA, XILINX, MENTOR GRAPHICS, ALTERA etc.,

MS Embedded Systems (ES)
Embedded system design is getting more complex and versatile with the drive to create smaller devices supporting enhanced functionalities. The students are trained along with sound practical’s equipping them well to face the industry requirements. Extensive training is given in the area of RTOS, Device Drivers, designing with various popular micro-controllers and other important area.


MS VLSI System Design & Verification (VSDV)
This program has been designed with more emphasis on “Project based learning”. This program’s greatest benefit is that the students will work with industry standard projects, latest cutting edge technologies in both 1st and 2nd semester under direct supervision of domain experts from industry (Whizchip) and from Manipal University (MCIS). Manipal University offers this program in association with Whizchip Bengaluru.

Dual Degree Program with ESIGELEC (ESI/CEI)
MS Embedded Systems & Instrumentation (MU-India) &
MSc-Control & Embedded Instrumentation (ESIGELEC-France)
This Dual Degree program has been jointly designed to develop international research and leading opportunities. Manipal University has entered into a MoU with ESIGELEC School of Engineering, Rouen, France (which is supported by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Rouen France) for transfer of credits after completion of the first semester at Manipal. In this “Dual degree Program” the students pursue the first semester program at Manipal, and the second semester in ESIGELEC, France. Semester 3 and 4 involve internship which is done in an industry or university or an R&D organization either in France or India, for which Manipal University and ESIGELEC provide assistance.

Embedded & Wireless Technology (EWT)
Evolution of future generation wireless networks mandates students to have solid understanding of their underlying theories and practical. The curriculum is comprised of deep insight into new methods of mobile applications development of embedded system, wireless communication, sensor networks and signal processing and integrated systems.

MS IT Management (ITM)
This program is designed to meet the needs of the new age crisis and promote the vision of Management of growing IT resources that have taken the world by storm. The objective of this course is to train the candidates to be professionals, and manage an Organization’s Resources & IT products. This course provides the platform for the students to join IT companies and possess the roles of IT Analysts, Business Analysts, Technology Consultants, etc.

MS High Performance Computing (HPC)
This program is designed to create students with expertise in advance tools and techniques for HPC software development and numerical algorithms, enable students to apply this knowledge to key areas in Science and Technology and equip them with the inter-disciplinary skills that form an integral part of modern computational science.

MS Computing Technologies & Virtualization (VIR)
This program emphasizes on the techniques for virtualizing and managing the hardware components. Virtualization is now clearly established as a foundation block for cloud computing. Describe various architectures for implementing system-level virtualization. Virtualization has become a substantial market, lead by companies like VMware, XenSource (owned by Citrix), Microsoft, Sun, Dell and others.

MSc Digital Design & Embedded Systems (DDES)
Embedded system design has grown tremendously in recent years in their complexity. The complexity demands a new type of designer, one who can easily cross the traditional border between hardware design and software design. This program has been designed for science graduates to bridge the gap between basic sciences and the upcoming embedded technology systems.

MSc Information Science (IS)
This program has been designed for science graduates to be a part of teams that design, implement, manage and use information systems. This provides the platform for the students to build strong theoretical and practical knowledge on information system design.

Program Structure

MS Programs
Two years. The first two semesters consists of a classroom teaching and laboratory work. Each semester consists of five subjects, with an associated lab, seminar and mini-project. This helps in gaining practical experience. During the third and fourth semester, the students undertake a live project work, wherein they get an opportunity to work with state-of-the-art technology in the industries/companies.

MSc Programs
Two years. The first three semesters consists of a classroom teaching and laboratory work. Each semester consists of five subjects, with an associated lab, seminar and mini-project. This helps in gaining practical experience. During the fourth semester, the students undertake a live project work, wherein they get an opportunity to work with state-of-the-art technology in the industries/companies.

Teaching Methodology
Teaching methodology involves normal classroom teaching with multimedia systems, seminars and guest lectures from eminent scholars in the advanced topics. The students are constantly guided and monitored by talented and dedicated faculty members.

Hardware/Software Tools
Students have the privilege of working with powerful software tools/ hardware like SYNOPSYS, Altera, XILINX, ALDEC, Code Composer, MATLAB, Qualnet, Nucleus RTOS and Microcontroller kits like Intel 8051, Motorola 6811, PIC and many more.

Assessment
MS program assessment is made up of a combination of formal in semester & end semesters examinations, seminar, mini-project and a dissertation for the individual project.

Eligibility for the admission
All MS Programs except IT Management
BE/B.Tech in Electronics & Communication, Electrical & Electronics, Telecommunication, Computer Science or any other relevant branches of engineering.

MS IT Management
BE/B.Tech in any Engineering discipline

MSc DDES/IS
BSc in Computer Science, Information Science, Mathematics, Electronics, Physics, Chemistry or BCA or BE with a minimum 50% aggregate marks.
Equivalent qualifications from Universities outside the India are also considered.

Scholarships and Prizes
  • Manipal University awards scholarships for top 10% of students admitted to the respective postgraduate programs at MCIS based on MUOET, an all India level entrance test from the academic year 2011. 20 scholarships have been awarded for the academic year 2010-2011.
  • MCIS was listed under the GE Foundation scholarship program from 2001, Medical Software students have received 17 scholarships. The scholarship covers student’s entire expenses of the course including fees, accommodation and other expenses. The selection of the students for this scholarship was based on the GE guidelines.
  • NXP semiconductor has awarded 17 scholarships for MS Embedded Systems students from the year 2005-2008. The scholarship amount includes monthly stipend, yearly contingency grant to the selected students and ` 2,00,000 (Rs Two Lakhs) per candidate to the university for the infrastructure development.
